Seal

Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel’s list of awards and accolades go on nearly as long as his full name. He’s won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance – all for “Kiss From a Rose,” his 1994 smash – and been nominated twelve more times. He’s sold twenty million records. And he’s earned all his success, thanks to a voice of soul, range, and power, both silky and sensual, lustrous and rich.

Hits, Seal’s 2009 best-of compilation, contains six covers: “Fly Like an Eagle,” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” “I Am Your Man,” and “Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again.” Naturally, we wanted to dig a little deeper. It was beyond certain that we wouldn’t have to dig too far down before we found gold. Here are just five of the worthy nuggets we unearthed.

Mellencamp Dylan Watchtower

It’s a great song, so why not play it twice? That’s what happened when John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan both appeared at the Outlaw Music Festival. The song was “All Along the Watchtower” and the date was September 12th in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Mellencamp played before Dylan and played it as the song third in his set. And when Dylan took the stage immediately after Mellencamp, he opened with his 1967 song. This was Dylan’s first performance of “Watchtower” since November 2018. Clearly there was no animosity between either performer since both played the song again on September 14th, 15th and 17th.

Mellencamp also performed “Watchtower” on his 2000 Good Samaritan Tour, where he performed for free on street corners and public parks. His version also appeared on a live album documenting the tour.

With the Outlaw Music Festival wrapped up, Mellencamp has no future dates scheduled, while Dylan kicks off the next leg of his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour on October 4th in the Czech Republic.

M Ward

M. Ward has covered an absolute ton of songs in his career, both on his own and as part of She & Him. He’s recorded this latest one with Australia’s Folk Bitch Trio for his new solo greatest hits album. Though hardly Godley & Creme’s only hit, or even their biggest, “Cry” seems to be the former 10cc members’ best remembered song, probably in part due to the iconic video the duo themselves directed.
